INTERNATIONAL: In an unprecedented gesture of camaraderie, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, received a heartening letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin, delivered by Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu during his surprise visit to Pyongyang. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday that the missive was presented during a meeting between Kim and Shoigu, wherein Kim expressed his gratitude for the warm message conveyed by President Putin.
The visit by Sergey Shoigu to North Korea coincided with the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War, an event celebrated in North Korea as "Victory Day." During the meeting, Kim and Shoigu discussed the prospects of further strengthening strategic and traditional DPRK-Russia relations, which have seen a long history of close ties, dating back to the Soviet era.
As part of the visit, Shoigu toured a military exhibition hosted by North Korea's Defense Ministry. The exhibition showcased "new-type weapons and equipment" produced by the country's arms industry.
